ISBN barcode questions
Does this tool give me an ISBN?
No. It only builds a barcode image from an ISBN-13 you already have. Get ISBNs from your national ISBN agency or from a platform that assigns one when eligible.
What is the difference between an ISBN and an ISBN barcode?
An ISBN is the number that identifies the edition. An ISBN barcode is the scannable graphic that encodes that number for retail and warehouse scanners. You need the number first; this page creates the graphic.
Do ebooks need an ISBN barcode?
No. ISBN barcodes are for physical covers. Some ebook stores may still want an ISBN as metadata, but they do not print a barcode on an ebook file.
Is this ISBN barcode generator free?
Yes. You can generate and download without buying a barcode package. No account is required.
Why only ISBN-13?
Retail book barcodes use the ISBN-13 / EAN-13 form. ISBN-10 is not accepted here.
Can I add a price to the barcode?
Yes, in optional settings. Default is no price. If you encode a price, keep it matched to what you sell; changing price later means generating again.
Is a QR code the same as an ISBN barcode?
No. A QR code is a different symbol. Book retail barcodes are EAN-13 style bars (optional price add-on), not the QR tools inside many design apps.
Do I need to buy a barcode from Bowker or another vendor?
Usually no. If you already have an ISBN, free generators can create the graphic. Some printers and platforms can also place a barcode for you.
What about Amazon KDP?
KDP can place a barcode if you upload a cover without one. Use this generator when you want the barcode inside your own cover file. Defaults here target common KDP-friendly size and black-on-white output.
